The Family

I have decided that I have turned into a blogger, I mean a person who just really likes to use any excuse to blog. So along with doing my fitness blog for my senior project I will be posting on my personal blog (this one) each week about different family values of the LDS church. I am doing this in conjunction with my Family class and hopefully we can all learn a little something new on my outlook of the family.

Family has also been on my mind a lot this week because Kendall's sweet grandpa passed away this Monday and I have just been thinking a lot about how eternal families are really so essential to our lives. Kendall's grandparents raised eight children in the gospel and all are active and have amazing families. That truly is an example to me because that is how Kendall and I want to raise our families and I think his grandparents did it all because of the faith in the gospel.

The family is very important and essential to the LDS faith. We had families in the preexistence and were born into a family on this earth. If you think about, every person on this earth is born into a family because it takes a mother and a father to bare a child and having those elements constitutes a family. I think it is so important to remember the vital parts of the family because they are getting questioned each day in our society.

So lets take a little journey through why the family is important. We believe in the preexistence and that everyone had a choice in the plan of happiness to come to this earth and all had families before we were born. Then there was the creation, where God made the earth and all the inhabitants on it. After the creation comes the Fall of Adam and Eve, where they partook of the forbidden fruit and were cast out of the Garden of Eden. If they had not been cast out then we would not have had agency to choose good from evil and the Atonement of Jesus Christ, where he suffered for ALL of our sins, would not be necessary.

With all of these events we were able to have and create families. Within our families is where our principles are built. Think back to when you were a child, where did you learn to tie your shoes, ride a bike, say your first words. That was all done through your parents and your family. This is also where we learn about the importance of family prayer, scripture study and family home evening.

All things essential to the well being of our lives are taught by our loving fathers and mothers. They have worked very hard to raise us to be the best we can be. It is also very important that they lead by example, we learn the importance of marriage, unity and love through the lives of our parents.

In a talk by Julie B. Beck she says, "Live in your home so that you’re brilliant in the basics, so that you’re intentional about your roles and responsibilities in the family. Think in terms of precision not perfection. If you have your goals and you are precise in how you go about them in your homes, youth will learn from you. They will learn that you pray, study the scriptures together, have family home evening, make a priority of mealtimes, and speak respectfully of your marriage partner. Then from your example the rising generation will gain great hope." (March 2011).

I absolutely love this quote because to me that puts this whole concept of the family in a nut shell. The learning and loving that happens in the family is essential to each of our well-beings. A man in my group in my Family class said that he really does not see any other purpose of being on this earth besides the family. I really can relate to that because we were born into this world through a family so Heavenly Father was teaching us from the very beginning that we are to always focus on the family.

The last semester of School

I can finally see the light ... I will be a college graduate it just 4 short months. It is crazy that I have finally gotten here, it has only taken me just under four years but sure feels like a life time. Part of that may be that I live a frozen tundra most of the year, but it truly has been an amazing experience.
Towards the end of the semester I will give my highlights of my college career but for now I am just so excited this is my last semester. There are some sad parts about graduating. Even though I will still be in Rexburg after I graduate, I will not be on campus. One thing I will miss most is my job. For six semesters I have had the opportunity as a secretary for the BYU-Idaho Activities office. I have had the opportunity to work with so many people who are definitely led by the spirit in all they do. Working with these people and in this department has made my experience so much richer, Heavenly Father had a plan when he put me in the department.
Let me tell you, it has been quite an amazing experience!
Have been with this jem since day one at activities, this was on our last first day of work and school at BYU-Idaho.

Idaho welcomed us back with this lovely snow storm the first week back!

My Goals in this last semester:

  • Do not be late in school or work (snow delays do not count)
  • Get straight A's
  • Be productive and get projects done week by week
  • Do not procrastinate (that is a little big, maybe just procrastinate less... haha)
  • Come closer to my Heavenly Father through my experiences and school work
  • Find a job
  • Graduate!
I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to have been able to attend BYU-Idaho for my college education. I know there is a reason I was to come here, one may have been to meet my husband but I think the biggest reason was to strengthen my testimony. This place is like a safe haven and I have really grown closer to my Heavenly Father through my time here. I am so excited to graduate this semester and have fun doing it! Happy January and happy day!

Side note: Today is Sunday and many things are happening in our lives right now and I cannot help but realize that Christ is really there for us in all aspects of our lives. He is my best friend and is there for all of us in times of sorrow and in happiness. My friend posted this video on Facebook and it just explains Christ as our companion so well.
Happy Sunday and Happy January!

New Year... Reflection & Goals!

Well 2013 is now over and sorry for not posting for awhile... Christmas break was quite an adventure with mine and Kendall's families! I know I am a little late but here is the new years post ... so sad I didn't post about Christmas. That truly is my favorite time of the year. Getting married and learning from my husband and family, I am coming to appreciate the true meaning of Christmas more and more.
Mine and Kendall's two week break started with our flight home being four hours late... that is what we get for living in Idaho. And then we got home and it was time for last minute Christmas shopping and festivities of the holiday to begin!
We did so many fun things with both of our families in San Diego ... see pictures below!

The Christmas jammies my parents got us!
Our cute stockings my mom found for us!

Happy New Year!

Kendall was very excited about our trip to Bass Pro Shop in Vegas ... this place is amazing!

With this new year comes resolutions and reflection on the last year!
Here are some great things that happen to me in 2013... Kendall FINALLY proposed, we got married and made it through our first semester of school being married! Also, I have a new niece, thanks to my sister and I was able to go through the temple with my dad, sister, Kendall and close family and my friends! 2013 was quite the year for me, there were many ups and downs but the main thing I realized is that nothing in this life is possible without my Heavenly Father guiding me.
This past year through family trials and triumphs I have grown closer to my Heavenly Father and Savior and have such a strong testimony of the gospel and how much Christ can comfort us when times are hard and be there smiling with us when things are going great!
Christ is my savior and last year would not have happened without His help and love. I am grateful for 2013 and the marriage to my best friend, I am also excited for 2014 and the many adventures that await Kendall and I!
Things to look forward to in 2014:

  • I graduate from BYU-Idaho on April 11th
  • Graduation trip
  • Kendall graduates in December of 2014
There are probably more things but those are our major events thus far!
Happy day and happy January!
